The Essen Health Care umbrella organization began as a single primary care office, Essen Medical Associates P.C., that opened in the South Bronx in 1999. Its founder, Dr. Sumir Sahgal, was committed to improving access to quality care for frequently neglected communities even though it often meant providing the level of care that patients needed while forgoing full or adequate reimbursement for all the services provided. Serving a predominantly underserved Medicaid patient population, the practice grew in response to the needs of the community and one location quickly become more. As the practice grew, the lack of access to critical specialist services became an increasing bottleneck in the delivery of necessary care. This need prompted Dr. Sahgal to incorporate these much-needed specialists into the practice. Today, Essen’s Medical Office division boasts of over 26 specialty services, including cardiology, endocrinology, women’s health, and psychiatry to name a few, available across its almost 30 multispecialty centers that now span the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island.
Essen’s ethos of holistic patient care has culminated in an integrated delivery system, an effective and efficient health care system that takes a patient-centered focus and better meets the needs of its patients through a continuum of services, across all care settings including office, urgent care, hospital, skilled nursing facility and home.
